A Boeing 737-800, was en route at FL380 when there was a problem with a fire extinguisher in the cockpit. It started to spray halon around the cockpit by itself. The pilots had to put on their oxygen masks due to the danger of inhaling the gas and began a rapid descent to FL110 and then diverted to their alternative airport. The fire extinguisher was replaced and the flight was able to take off again two hours after landing.
