A plane was performing a routine passenger flight and beginning its descent when a passenger suddenly started to act strangely. He took some gasoline and a lighter from his belongings and tried to set a fire. He managed to start a small fire before passengers and cabin crew overpowered him and put out the fire. He was restrained until the flight landed and taken into police custody upon arrival at their destination. It’s unclear how he got the lighter and gasoline on board and police are currently investigating the incident.

Audio answer: ‘Don’t forget the doors!!’

Here’s the text to the listening from yesterday.

Enjoy!!

An Airbus was climbing to its cruise level when a passenger noticed something strange about the left engine. The fan cowl door was open and seconds after the passengers noticed this, the door separated from the engine. The same thing happened to the other engine also. This engine, the right one, was also damaged during the fan cowl door separation and fuel started to leak. The passenger alerted the flight attendant who told the pilots. They immediately cancelled their climb and initiated a descent to return to their airport of origin. Fortunately there was no fire, the plane landed safely and the engine with the fuel leak was shut down. The passengers disembarked and took another flight 90 minutes later.

Text: ‘Simultaneous takeoff’

Here’s the text to the listening from yesterday.

Enjoy!!

A company A319, with the callsign 6110, was lined up and waiting for takeoff. At the same time another company A320 with the callsign 1610 was lined up and waiting for takeoff on an intersecting runway. When the controller gave clearance for the pilot with the callsign 6110 to takeoff, the pilots of the other flight thought they had received clearance, so they started to accelerate also. When the controller noticed the mistake he told the pilots of flight 1610 to cancel their takeoff. As a precaution the pilots of the original flight, 6110, cancelled their takeoff too. After returning to their thresholds both flights were given further clearances to take off, separately this time.

A Boeing 777 backtracked along the runway to prepare for takeoff. After turning and without stopping, the plane accelerated down the runway and took off. There were two people watching the Boeing 777 take off from a public road beyond the airport’s perimeter fence. When the plane turned and accelerated they were blown away by the jet blast, fell over and received injuries. An ambulance collected them and took them to the hospital. They left hospital a day later with no major injuries.

An aircraft was on approach to its destination when the crew noticed a failure of the no.3 hydraulic system and a low pressure warning. They declared PAN PAN and performed an alternate gear extension. They landed safely a few moments later. The aircraft stopped for a quick check by emergency services after exiting the runway, but was cleared to continue. The aircraft continued to the apron but on taxiway Delta, it failed to make the turn and came to a stop with all gear on the grass. The passengers disembarked via airstairs onto the grass and were taken to the terminal on busses, the aircraft was subsequently towed to the apron.

Watch out for the building text

Here’s the text to the listening from yesterday.

Enjoy!!

A 747 was outbound and taxiing to the holding point of the runway. It was night and very dark, and unfortunately the 747’s pilots missed the turn to the holding point. They continued straight ahead instead of turning right and ended up on a general aviation taxiway. Continuing with the taxi, the right wing hit an office building and cut through part of the upper section of the building. Some people in the building were injured, but none seriously, while nobody in the aircraft was injured. The building and aircraft both received substantial damage.
