Audio answer: ‘Takeoff miscalculation’

Here’s the text to the listening from yesterday.

Enjoy!!

An A320 taxied towards the runway for takeoff. Their taxi instructions led them to join the runway via a taxiway which gave them only 60% of the available runway for takeoff. The crew however, had configured the plane for takeoff using 100% of the runway length. As they rolled for takeoff they were unable to achieve the performance necessary due to the reduced runway available, but fortunately they were able to takeoff without incident and completed a safe flight after that. The aviation authority is investigating what happened.

Audio answer: ‘Tragedy averted’

Here’s the text to the listening from yesterday.

Enjoy!!

An A320 was lined up and holding on runway 10. At the same time, a small general aviation plane was taxiing from the general aviation apron to take off and needed to cross runway 10 on its way there. The small plane was given confusing instructions and continued past the holding point to cross runway 10. At this time the A320 had been cleared to take off. As the plane rolled for takeoff, the tower controller saw the small general aviation plane move close to the runway and radioed it to stop immediately. The pilot stopped his small plane just on the edge of the runway and the A320 had to move to the right of the runway while rolling out, to avoid a crash. Fortunately the two planes didn’t collide but it was very dangerous situation and is being investigated.

Audio answer: ‘Turbulence on takeoff’

Here’s the text to the listening from yesterday.

A 747 taxied onto the runway and lined up. A 777 had just departed moments before. Shortly after, the controller gave the 747 clearance to takeoff and the plane started its takeoff roll. With the plane close to V1 it veered sharply left, then right. The pilots immediately applied the brakes and brought the plane to a stop. The plane taxied off the runway and stopped completely. It had 12 flat tyres. Investigators determined that turbulence from the 777 had caused the plane to move dangerously left and right on the runway.

A 777 with 246 passengers and 15 crew, was descending towards its destination when the pilots noticed a cargo smoke warning indication. Due to their proximity to their destination, they expedited the approach to the runway and landed safely. Emergency services were called out but found no fire or smoke.
