Video answers: ‘Solar Impulse update’

Here are the answers to last Friday’s video, enjoy!

This time in our structure help we talk about the difference between ‘history’ and ‘story’. It’s common for students to confuse the difference and use history when story is necessary. Look at the explanation in the diagram below and read the extra examples below. Then create your own sentences and read them out loud to practice.

Text: ‘Simultaneous takeoff’

Here’s the text to the listening from yesterday.

Enjoy!!

A company A319, with the callsign 6110, was lined up and waiting for takeoff. At the same time another company A320 with the callsign 1610 was lined up and waiting for takeoff on an intersecting runway. When the controller gave clearance for the pilot with the callsign 6110 to takeoff, the pilots of the other flight thought they had received clearance, so they started to accelerate also. When the controller noticed the mistake he told the pilots of flight 1610 to cancel their takeoff. As a precaution the pilots of the original flight, 6110, cancelled their takeoff too. After returning to their thresholds both flights were given further clearances to take off, separately this time.

Video: ‘Designing an aircraft interior’ answer

Here are the answers to last Friday’s video, enjoy!

Suggested ICAO level for video: 5+

  1. Chuck thought that the customer wanted his plane to reflect his personal tastes, his ‘touch and feel’, and that it look like the interior of one of his cars.
  2. He mentions the carbon fibre inlays, the peach wood veneer, which he says was very difficult to use because it reacts to the sunlight.
  3. He says that they go through some of the materials that the customer might like and then make a photo realistic model of the interior to show the customer. They usually show the customer three different material option sets to help the customer clearly visualise what the interior will look like when it’s finished. Then they’ll go back and make the necessary modifications before finalising the design.
