Here’s the text to the listening from yesterday.

Enjoy!!

A flight was climbing to its cruise altitude when the captain noticed a problem with his seat. It wouldn’t lock into the desired position and constantly moved forwards and backwards. After talking to the company, the crew decided to return to their airport of origin to fix the problem there. The plane took off again two hours after landing.

Video answers: ‘How does an engine work?’

Here are the answers to last Friday’s video, enjoy!

Suggested ICAO level for video: 5+

  1. Air is pulled into the engine and is pushed out the back at a great speed.
  2. It’s an engine where the majority of the air sucked into it doesn’t pass through the compressor, combustor or turbines, but passes these parts to be ejected directly into the exhaust stream.
  3. It uses less fuel and is therefore more efficient.
  4. They turn the turbines and its shaft, which drives the compressor and fan.
  5. In truth, it’s team work, the air that passes through the engine provides the energy to drive the engine, and the air that bypasses the engine provides most of the thrust to move the plane forward. But neither could exist without the other.

Audio answer: ‘Arsonist on board’

Here’s the text to the listening from yesterday.

Enjoy!!

A plane was performing a routine passenger flight and beginning its descent when a passenger suddenly started to act strangely. He took some gasoline and a lighter from his belongings and tried to set a fire. He managed to start a small fire before passengers and cabin crew overpowered him and put out the fire. He was restrained until the flight landed and taken into police custody upon arrival at their destination. It’s unclear how he got the lighter and gasoline on board and police are currently investigating the incident.
